I watched a documentary on J.R.R. Tolkien yesterday. It included an interview snippet in which Tolkien tells how as a college professor he had to grade term papers, a task he describes as laborious and boring. One student handed in a superfluous page somewhere in his paper. Tolkien was delighted that he didn't have to read that page. Instead, he started scribbeling down a sentence on that blank sheet of paper: In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.

It seems, that sometimes a little boredom can go a pretty long way...
