In 1980 about 3.500.000 people suffered from Dracunculiasis, an infectious disease caused by a parasitic worm, against which there is no vaccine available. It leaves half of those who get it permanently disabled. Since 2015 the number of infections per year is in the low two-digits, last year it was 14. 2015 is also the year when the man whose non-profit organization spearheaded the eradication campaign, said that his last wish was that the guinea worm dies before he does. He was then 91 years old and lived to be 100.

Many more things can be said about him, but if that were the only thing, it would already be enough to call his life well lived. His name was Jimmy Carter. May he rest easy.
