A great metaphor (although there might be a component of age to that assesment) to describe many components of the contemporary mainstream software engineering process: Tamagotchi tooling

Some tools are like tamagotchis. They're a tool, so they have some use. But that's not all, they also require substantial upkeep to not break down, and the owner takes some pleasure in the process.

The amount of it, in my personal opinion, should be as close to zero as possible. Unfortunately, the merchants of complexity are great salespeople.
