I recently asserted that a lot of labor which typically is divided up between specialized roles actually should better be the work of a single mind. As the capabilities of a single mind then becomes an upper bound for the output, this assertion begets the question: How much software can a single person maintain and when is their capacity reached?
This is hard to quantify for a person, yet in relative terms, I think that a sufficiently large orga structure tends to ask less of their employees than the individual would be capable of. Now, I don't want to imply that employees in coporate orga structures have a lot of slack, rather the opposite. But the dysfunctions of the organization tend to bind the mental/intellectual capacity in their system to tasks of lesser importance and impact. One could structure the system in a way that, if not fully prevents then at least minimizes these inefficiencies, those in power to design that just don't choose to (maybe some even even actively choose not to).
