One of the most subtle nerd flexes up to this day must be Knuth versus Email. Not as if Donald Knuth would need to flex among the nerds anyway. He wrote, undated but presumably in the 1990es:
I have been a happy man ever since January 1, 1990, when I no longer had an email address. I'd used email since about 1975, and it seems to me that 15 years of email is plenty for one lifetime.
Now, I actually like to correspond via mail, and if memory doesn't completely fail my, I think I've signed up for my first email account in 1997 (rocketmail), when access to the internet via dial-up modem was charged by the minute, so a dozen years are over since my first fifteen years of email usage were up...
But sometimes I wonder, what would I do if I had long uninterrupted hours of study available?
